The Class 56 is a British diesel locomotive built for heavy freight duties between 1976 and 1984. BOTH the Ivatt Diesel Recreation Society (IDRS) and Class 40 Preservation Society (CFPS) have benefited from the donation of Class 56 power units from main line freight operator GB Railfreight. These units have become available as they are being replaced by General Motors engines during the Class 56 to Class 69 conversion programme.

The first 30 locomotives (56001 - 56030, factory classification LDE3500) were built by Electroputere in Romania , but these typically suffered from poor construction standards and many were withdrawn from service early for extensive rebuilding.

The result was the formation of the Class 56 Group in August 1992, with the aim of catering for people who are interested in the Class 56 locomotives and wanted to see one or more of these fine locomotives preserved for future generations to enjoy.
